I really enjoyed working with Grappa. I especially liked the blue on white because it was much easier to control than the other 2. My name is the first one I have displayed here. My husband thinks the second one looks like a musical note and I somewhat agree. I love the orange on black very much. Class was a ton of fun and good luck everyone!!

This is a really neat program. I tried to do a search to find different variations but was not successful. I had fun anyway though! This class was great fun and taught me a LOT! I am so happy to have been able to play with programs that I never would have known about otherwise!

I wish I could say I loved working with fractals, but I can't. I liked it but not as much as apophysis. The designs are kind of cool, but I couldn't download the trial of photoshop again so I have the watermarks. I think these 2 designs are kind of cool. I have more on fotothing and I'll post a couple of more tomorrow. Let me know what you think...

This program was pretty neat, but I must admit that I became VERY frustrated after it didn't save my tracks 3 times!!!!!! Needless to say, I worked on this project all weekend and then was up late trying to finish it to post yesterday. It is STILL running way faster than I want it to, and unfortunately you can see the HyperCam screen in the video which takes away from my project, but it is finally DONE! I am kind of a perfectionist and so I wish it had come out the way I imagined it...

I'm not sure what it was about the "green" palette that I just adored how these 2 fractals came out. :) There are more in my fotothing, but man... I can absolutely see how someone can get sucked into changing patterns and colors for HOURS. Such a neat program. I ended up getting VMware Fusion on my laptop... and... then got thrown on bedrest with some swelling and high blood pressure due to my pregnancy, so my apologies for bein' kinda pokey on getting these up, but my fotothing has more and I will be uploading them over the next couple of days! And ps* blood pressure is much better. ;)

What I really like about this class is that everytime I finish my assignments I share them with my husband before posting. We agree on some and disagree on others but it makes class more interesting. Everythime he sees the finished product, he asks me how I got there and I show him. He likes the class. He thinks this is fun, which it really is. Apophysis was much easier than I thought it would be. I saw the video on the syllabus and that was very helpful, otherwise it would've taken me longer to figure stuff out.

For some reason the last five images I posted were much more fun for me than the first five. The two images I have posted here were at some point the Disney Castle and Mariah Carey. They are obviously something else with slight remnants of what they once started out as. This project was more fun for me than the Warhol one because I understood it right from the beginning.

Sorry I have taken so long in posting my painting machine images, but I took so long on the Warhol project that I fell behind. These are two of the five images I posted that I like the best. I'm doing the action script, but sometimes it doesn't look as good on some images as it does others as you will see with my pumpkin image. I will hopefully post another 5 tomorrow and you can let me know what you think. Can't wait to work on week 5 and six because your images look amazing!

Here are some of my ultra fractals. I was also unsuccessful in saving them without water marks. Although I followed the instructions on the video, I was unable to retrieve the images and had to "copy image" and paste into Photoshop. This was fun once I got the hang of it. This week I will be away for a conference for work, so I have been working on line rider since last week! Its fun but time consuming! Tips if you save, you have to keep re-naming it. I thought I had a whole project saved...nope. Use the flags!! They are so helpful once your tracks get long.

Mac users, I found Snapz Pro X. This allowed me to record the movie.

Ok, I have to admit, fractal...not my favorite. I found it challenging to save the information without the watermarks. I am using my son's computer which doesn't have the tools I need to make my projects easier! I am a mac user and boy do I miss it!!! :-(

With Mac there is an awesome function that allows you to copy your screenshots...can't figure it out on PC! Grrr...little frustrated this week but enjoyed making the fractals once I got the hang of it.

so, i'm having a bit of an issue with getting apophysis to work on my mac. i've gotten suggestions from jerry (thank you!), but unfortunately, the scripts function aren't actually working well with the program. so i'm not able to manipulate it further than the image you see here. i am, however, in the process of downloading vmware fusion, a program that you can install that allows for you to operate your mac AS WELL as have a windows interface in the same environment, where i'm going to attempt to install apophysis and get this going. :( sorry it's taking a bit of time, but everyone's images look so great... i have to get this going the right way!! thanks for understanding. ;)

Time to be working on creating some fractals in Ultrafractal... Download the fully functional program at http://ultrafractal.com You have an unlimited free trial... it is just that we will have to get our images using the print screen button on your keyboard, then go to Photoshop and choose file>new then edit>paste... now you'll have the image to post... If you render to disk, your image will have water marks on it...

Time to get going with fractal art... To get you started, there is a good tutorial here: http://www.arcanefractals.com/apotut_forms.shtml Give it a try... When you see a flame fractal you like, you save it as a jpg image by choosing FLAME>RENDER TO DISK and choose a size of 500 or 600 pixels on the long dimension... As in the tutorial, I set the quality of my render to 35 and played with blur, brightness and ran a spiralize script... I'll get started on a video too... Try doing a search in Google for Apophysis tutorial as well... Go ahead, have fun and remamber, you can't break anything!

I couldn't decide which I liked better...I think I like seeing what the original was a little bit. F2 always turned everything I did dark too, which I guess was from whatever actions I chose...more images on fotothing. This was fun!

both of these images were created using "the painting machine" technique as explained very wonderfully via the video provided by jerry. thanks so much for that! it was a real help! :) the first image is of a bunch of cacti that i took a photo of in aruba on my honeymoon. the 2nd is of a gerber daisy i received as a gift last february. i will be uploading more images to my fotothing, but found these to be the most "fun" so to speak. :) my husband even found this fun & he's an "avid photoshopper." heh.

HELLO EVERYONE!

Well I am half way there to posting the rest of my painting machine images on fotothing. This week's project was pretty cool. I took some of my old shots and transformed them. I also made them when my 9 year old step-son Jared was around. In his words this class is "so awesome" and he is "bummed" that he can't do this in the fourth grade. He helped me with the final projects. Hope everyone enjoys!!!! I posted a picture that was taken at Mystic Aquarium last year. It's Ryan and my husband Matt in the big Shark Mouth exhibit.

**Fotothing is back up and running and I have posted my work there.** Secondly, I am having some trouble uploading images to this blog because some of the artwork I created in photoshop were saved as psd files?? I'm not the best at figuring out these kinds of things, so if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the help! ****Thank you for the help & suggestions, I fixed my files & posted them!***
Playing with the filters was a lot of fun! I enjoyed searching for images that I knew would become even more interesting as I warped them to my liking!
I did have trouble with the Warhol Project. I wish I could upload it, but again, having issues. Also, I created my main image, and I wanted to duplicate it and re-color the duplicates to make the four images. I'm not sure if that is the correct way to do it, but I wasn't having any luck anyway...so, suffice it to say that I wish I had more here to show, but this is it for now. I am hoping to edit this post if and when I can figure out the technicalities of the computer files... With a lot of patience & persistence, I finally figured it out!

After a few failed attempts at some pretty complicated pictures, I decided to take a couple of goofy shots of my husband... which actually worked out well! This particular picture I chose for the Warhol mainly because I loved his expression. ;)

I found this to be... a little trying, as the previous poster had said, but once I got the hang of what was where, it seemed to go pretty smoothly. I think next, I may try to do one for my friend's birthday as a present! :)

*On a sidenote, I haven't been able to access fotothing.com ALL DAY today & have some photos to upload. Anyone else having this issue?

Filters & Andy!!! Week 2

Hello All!

What exciting tasks this week! I started working with filters early in the week and really enjoyed it. I took some of my own photos and revised them. The one below is my favorite. I took this picture in New York City this summer. I was attempting an all vegan diet at the time and thought this was too funny to leave behind! I cropped the picture a bit and enhanced the colors. Then I used the "cut out" filter for this project. I like the cartoon feel to it.

Once I was done filtering I attempted the Andy Warhol project. Boy was I frustrated at first! I spent about 6 hours of trying to figure out how to cut out the background from the pictures! I walked away for a day and tried again. After a few more hours of Googling and You Tubing, I finally got the hang of things. I found that using the pen tool made things A LOT easier. It took a while to get things just right, but I am very pleased with my results. Here is my favorite rendition of an Any Warhol masterpiece! It's my son Ryan. Last year he was playing with one of those huge popcorn tins and some how managed to get stuck in it!

Filter Effects

I really enjoyed using the filter effects. I played around with the two images I posted and found I like the artistic effects and the neon effects the most. I used two digital images I still have from another class. Each one I used for two different effects to see the difference. The originals are posted on my fotothing in case enyone wants to see what they looked like.

When deciding on what image to use as far as my filtering went, I wanted something colorful after taking a look at the way some of the filter methods that myJanee.com used with her hot air balloon! In this, the first image is my original, and my second is using "Lighting Effects" with a Red Texture Channel. I've had a ton of fun working with the gumball machine... I have more posted to my fotothing. :)

MOCA Work I Liked

I chose 2 people from moca because I liked them both the best. The picture above is called Sugar n' Spice from Cindy McDaniel. I like this because to me it reflects society today. Unfortunately, the kids of this generation are growing up too fast. The lipstick and nail polish are the spice and reflect the loss of innocence at an early age. The sugar is the innocence they still have. I like the name because it reflects the picture accurately. She says, "I combine mediums but mostly I work from just my photos in Photoshop." I like her technique very much. I have a couple of her pictures on my fotothing if you want to see more.

The other picture all the way at the top is called Vanishing Youth by Marc Moss. I love the way he uses color in this. I also like the title because it looks like a young boy walking away from the light to the dark which can be seen as him aging. He says about his work, "I have begun to concentrate more on photography, first with painting on my own b+w photographs and now with digital photography. I work with an Olympus dslr and Photoshop 7 software. I take images from architecture, nature, and people and combine them to create unique spiritual landscapes. I hope that my work will help the viewer to connect with his/her own sense of spirituality." I see surrealness in his work and I liked that very much. I have another one of his works posted on my photothing as well.

Welcome to week 2... I'm impressed with the posts reviewing work found on the Museum of Computer Art site... Keep checking out the work of other artists as we go along for inspiration and ideas... that is the best way to learn...

This week, you'll post images that have been subject to filter effects in Photoshop. If you do a google search, you will see that there is a mountain of information and resources available out there... One good one that has been around a long time is here: http://www.myjanee.com/tuts/filter/filter.htm#artistic If you have been shooting your own digital images and would like to work with them as a starting point, great! If not, not to worry... go to Google images and search for images there... since you will be radically transforming them, they become yours pretty quickly! You don't need to follw the aJaynee one.. there are thousands out there...

Warhol chose pop icons like Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor to reduce to simple and large silkscreen effects... You can use either a family member or choose your own pop icon from a search in Google images...

The artist I chose to research was Shawn Henry. As Shawn notes, he has been manipulating his designs and art originally for newsletters in the company he worked for using Windows Paint, and eventually graduating to Paint Shop Pro. He said that he still uses PSP9 to date to achieve his smudge brush technique.

It became more difficult to get any MORE information on Mr. Henry because his website is limited and under construction, but MOCA had the easiest, most diverse collection of his work.

Steve Bingham's work is captivating. From photographs that are probably interesting without being altered, he transforms his work into thought provoking and deeper works of art through his work with Photoshop. While I am not certain what techniques he is using, I would guess that he is fond of playing with color, brightening his photos and also enhancing the details to make them sharper and crisper, such as in Old Man. It's as if this man is emerging from underwater, though he has most likely placed some sort of white layer on top of his photograph, which tricks the eye into seeing wetness.

Broken Dreams is so interesting because it can mean so many things. On Bingham's website, he has even posted a poem about this piece. http://www.dustylens.com/digital_photos.htm

The background looks as if it has been painted up close, but from afar, it looks to be broken glass, a dreary winter day, or even spiderwebs.

Neptune and Sea Worshippers, the color has been manipulated, through what I am guessing are filters. The hand in the background has been colored with the use of layering and gradient coloring in bright neon's.

Bingham states on his website, "For the most part, PhotoShop CS (8) is used to produce both the straight photographs and the highly manipulated and composited photographs. This is the industry standard and has so many features that few professionals ever master it completely! It is a VERY powerful program. I also use Corel Draw, Bryce, and Image Styler."

Copenhagen Metro StationSiff Skovenborg is an interesting artist who defines her style as abstract and expressionistic. Siff was born in Jylland Denmark and has a diverse educational background in communications, psychology, and teaching. Siff has created beautiful works of digital art but also has a background in painting, writing, singing, and photography. I found her digital art and photographs to reflect humanistic subject matter along with the intricate framework within the human psyche. Time and self reflection are recurrent themes in her work. The photograph of the Copenhagen Metro Station just shouts out to me “who are you, where are you going, and when will you get there!”
X-ray is an example of Skovenborg’s pictures made in Photoshop with full or partial use of stock photo. This work of art incorporates a human x-ray in with a very textural organic design in shades of blue, white, and brown. One can hardly help but look into and analyze one’s inner self while viewing Siff Skovenburg’s art.
Siff states “My goal is to go with the flow in art making. I am trying not to be focused on ideas and mental restrictions. I do though use knowledge of composition in a later state ... So my aim is to let art come from a place beyond the conscious mind. This means in practice that when I start a new painting I do not know where to go or which kind of expression is going to come out of it. I simply start to put colour on paper or whatever comes to mind.” I find this approach to be remarkable because such powerful and meaningful images can be created not from focused intent but rather develop from the artist’s intuition and connection to the unconscious mind.

She says "she has the desire to bring to life the image from her heart, and faith plays a key role in the creation of her art". In other words she takes risk and with faith she creates wonders.

My name is Jessica Sandler and this is my 4th class with Jerry! I have learned so much from his photography & art classes! I am 12 credits away from my Associates Degree. When I started here at Albertus, my son had just turned 1 year old and I was going through the "what do I want to do with the rest of my life" phase. I am a sales manager for a cellular company and though it is financially rewarding, I feel that I can do more in this world than just "sell cell phones". For some time now, I have been "trying to find myself". I am 27 years old and for some reason, I felt as though at this point in life, I should be defined as...something! Until today when I was looking through the artists on the MOCA page. I randomly clicked on the artist Joe C. K. Lee and just by skimming through his website I found this awesome quote from George Bernard Shaw "Life isn't about finding yourself; life is about creating yourself." Quite fitting for this moment in my life.

So here's to another Mod of learning and creation!

Though I like Lee's work a lot, I wanted to look around a bit more. That's when I found Pavel Rehurek. I love how he takes photographs and alters them into beautiful works of art. These are two images that caught my eye. I didn't find any information on what he was using to enhance his photographs. His website states the following: Photo-Based Digital Art on Paper, Lens-based images (born in my camera) Digitally adjusted and giclee printed Fine Art. I got most of that except for "giclee" which I found out is french for "fine spray"*. Giclee is defined as "a print made by the digital process, typically inkjet.*

I like the intensity of Carmel, but I love the beauty and serenity of Pond, making that one my favorite. During my museum appreciation class, I had a wonderful opportunity to discover works of Art that I would have never found otherwise. I also discovered what pieces called out to me more than others. Bright and intense works were generally my picks for the week, but I relate that to where I was at that point in my life, busy days running into each other. Now I am a place where I welcome relaxation and an appreciation for peace. That is why the Pond portrait is my favorite.

My name is Tracy Petrillo. I am just coming back to Albertus after taking Mod 4 2008 off because I had a beautiful baby boy on April 21st! Life has been wonderfully crazy as I get used to my new role as a mommy, but I LOVE it beyond words!! Now I am trying to juggle the challenges of work, school and motherhood and still remain sane! I am hoping to graduate next year.
I am a communications major with a focus on promotions. I am also drawn to visual communications, which is why I wanted to take an art class this Mod.
Back when I was going to Southern (right after high school in 1995) I was an art major. That didn't pan out and after a too-long hiatus, I am back and trying to put my love of the creative to work. I am hoping to be able to wipe away the dust that has probably settled on my artistic abilities and learn new ways to make some visually cool images with programs that I have never used before. I am excited to start this class and am looking forward to meeting everyone through their artwork!

What Do I Need To Do For Class This Week?

By Next Tuesday you need to

-Join this blog by clicking on the link blogger sent you (from me) that brings you to a sign up page to join the blog... you don't need to create your own blog.... just join this one. This is our classroom. When you post here, that is like coming to class.... If you are not posting, that is like skipping class. Coming to class is the most important component of your grade... along with the work you create for your portfolio. If you create a brilliant portfolio but avoid posting to this blog, the highest grade you could receive for this class is a "C".

-Set up your fotothing.com account and send me an email inviting me as your friend. That way I can add you to the class meeting area on fotothing. Post 5-10 images per week at a minimum on fotothing... Comment on other students' work there. Use this blog to show us an example of what you are doing and invite others to view the rest of your work on fotothing.

-Read the syllabus and take a look at all of the projects listed.... You can work on them one by one or at the same time as the spirit moves you... It is very important that you work consistently through the class and not disappear... read through the Criteria for grading linked on the upper right of the blog...

-Download and installPhotoshop CS3 available as a free download from http://adobe.com/downloads it will expire in 30 days though :-(

-Post a quick bio and hello to the blog... you should up load a photo of yourself too!

My name is Marissa and I'm really looking forward to this course. I took Two Dimensional Design in Mod 5 2008 and enjoyed it a lot. I'm a General Psychology major with a minor in Art. I love all kinds of art but my true passion is painting. This is the only recent picture I had from a wedding I was in this summer. The wedding was in Charleston, SC which is one of my favorite cities to visit. I posted some other pics from the trip as well.

A little about me

Just to clarify, this is not a picture of me. It is a picture of where my life is headed and what I am discovering. This picture is of my two older sisters on my father's side. We have just found each other after 22 years. I always knew they were somewhere and with the assistance of the internet, I was able to find them while searching for my father whom I have never met. Change is inevitable, but this is a good time of change for me.

I am taking my last 3 classes at Albertus and I will be done completely by this December. I am a Sociology major and a Criminal Justice minor. I love photography and all types of art in general. I really don't know what to expect of this class, but since I enjoyed the last class I had with Mr. Nevins, I assume this will be the case in this class as well.

Many changes are here for me because my husband will be leaving to the Army soon. I just took a substitute teaching position. I have found my family for the first time. I'm new to the whole having a family thing and it's really nice. Plus, I will be done with school soon and I haven't decided where to go from there yet. So to all, enjoy the class and hope we can all learn from each other. Good luck!

My name is Lauren Rua... formerly Lauren Crossman... ;)

Life has been busy for me this year! I am 24 years old. I just got married August 1st, 2008 to my wonderful husband, Rick. And we are expecting our first child, a boy named Logan, in November! Our honeymoon was in Aruba and it was probably the best vacation I've ever taken! We recently moved from Waterbury to Thomaston. I'm finishing my last run of classes here at Albertus... and through a tough beginning of the year... have found solace at the end. :)

I've also taken Digital Photography I with Jerry & am looking forward to this course, as I am the marketing guru at my current job in Terryville! Can't wait!

Hi Everyone!

To get things started, let me tell you a bit about myself.... I have been teaching full time at Albertus Magnus College in New Haven, CT (www.albertus.edu) for the past 29 years and am grateful for the opportunity to spend my life working with students who want to learn more about art. I've been married for the past 33 years to my high school sweetheart and have 2 wonderful sons, 25 and 29. My older son is married and has a 1 year old son.He was hired recently by Disney as a Graphic Designer in their Book Division.

Here I am sailing out of the Great Salt Pond in Block Island... I have been a sailor for years and you can find my wife out on the water every weekend of the summer.

My main interest is photography and I earned an M.F.A. in still photography from Rochester Institute of Technology. At Albertus I teach not only Photography but a range of other courses which include Digital Photography both online and face to face, Foundation Design (2-D and 3-D), Graphic Design, Ceramics, Intro to Computer Art, and a new course I developed, The Museum Experience.
